Kitchen to Swine to Kitchen

The pigs at Earth University eat food scraps from the dining hall. Their waste is processed in the pond by aquatic plants, which are used to generate methane gas. The methane gas is used to cook the food in the dining hall.

  1. Now that's really recycling! How did they process the waste in the pond by the aquatic plants? To be honest, I'd probably lose my appetite after finding out about this cycle but thats really intresting!

  2. So if the plants are used to generate methane gas in a pond, how is the gas harvested? And isn't methane gas normally bad for the environment? - KH

  3. The biomass is used to make methane, which is used to cook. Methane is bad when it's in the atmosphere. It's being combusted completely here, so it's not bad.

  6. Hi RC,

Earth University specializes in this and has helped many farmers around to set this up. The government helps fund this, so lots of farmers have done this.
